Friday was one of those nights. UMD controlled large chunks of the game’s five-on-five play, but Western goalie Cameron Rowe was outstanding, and the Bulldogs struggled to finish some glorious scoring chances.
Meanwhile, it felt like every UMD turnover or coverage breakdown led to a goal. Defenseman Joey Pierce was ejected from a second straight game, this time for a cross-check to the head of a Western player. WMU didn’t score on that power play (it was actually one of the better kills of the season by UMD, blocking four shots and only giving up one on goal), but it wasn’t three minutes after it ended that the Broncos took the lead for good and were able to add two more to it before the second was over.
The Bulldogs get a chance to rebound from a 5-2 loss on Adam Johnson Night. I can think of a great way to honor Johnson, and it’s with this young team taking a step forward.
Come on down, get a t-shirt, and bid on one of the jerseys in the auction.
UMD changes up the fourth line, inserting Trevor Stachowiak for his second collegiate game, while Matthew Perkins returns from an upper-body injury. Kyle Bettens and Blake Bechen are scratched.
Adam Gajan vs Hampton Slukynsky.
