CLOQUET, MN (KDAL) – The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, local governments, landowners and others are beginning plans to restore elk to the northeastern part of the state.
The proposal would relocate 100 to 150 elk from northwestern Minnesota to the Fond du Lac Reservation and surrounding areas over a period of several years.
To ensure that the elk population would remain stable in the northwest, only a sustainable number of the animals would be captured and moved to the northeast each year.
The first round of relocations is planned for the spring of 2026.
Public input on the plan begins this month with two public meetings scheduled for February.
An online meeting is set for February 10th from 6 to 8 p-m and an in-person meeting February 13th from 6 to 8 p-m at the Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College in Cloquet.
