HIBBING, MN (KDAL) – The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Department and Hibbing Police are investigating a phone scam that has taken some large amounts of money from victims in the Britt, Ely and Hibbing areas over the past two days.
The scam involves a phone call that claims a relative, usually a grandchild, is in jail and money is required for bail.
The caller tells the victim to withdraw the cash which will then be picked up by a courier.
Recent victims have described the person who picks up the money as a black male in his early 20’s, driving a 5 to 6 year old white Chevrolet compact or small SUV with a black license plate.
Authorities remind citizens to ignore these types of calls and to contact 911 to report it.
