OMAHA, Neb. — It’s “Country and Cowbells Night” here in Omaha.
Join us and see if we survive with our ears fully intact.
On the ice, UMD returns from a bye to battle Omaha. Like I said in the preview, byes are weird. They aren’t necessarily as helpful as one might think.
Jan. 17, Western Michigan returned from a bye to play at North Dakota. UND led 1-0 after one, and it took a third period comeback for the Broncos to have a chance to win in overtime.
Jan. 24, it was Denver off a bye at UMD. While the Pioneers had the puck a lot in the Friday game, they weren’t as sharp at either end of the ice, and UMD held on late to win 4-3.
Jan. 31, North Dakota returned from bye at St. Cloud State. Five-point weekend, but the point the Fighting Hawks surrendered came when they blew a two-goal lead and settled for a 3-3 tie and shootout win in the Friday game.
Once is an accident. Twice is a trend. Three’s a crowd, or something.
UMD best be on its toes early in this one. This Mavericks team is bound to be salty after conceding 11 straight goals in an 11-2 loss on Saturday in Denver, and while DU got away with trailing for a lot of those games last weekend, this is not a group that you want to be chasing the game against. Omaha defends well (Saturday excepted) and gets great goaltending from Simon Latkoczy.
Lines are in a blender. See below. Harper Bentz remains out.
