After an entertaining comeback win over Omaha Tuesday, UMD now readies to face “one of the best teams in the country,” per head coach Scott Sandelin.
And that’s not hyperbole. Denver is that good. The Pioneers did incur some significant offseason losses, including the late signing of dynamic forward Emilio Pettersen by the Calgary Flames. Goalie Devin Cooley moved on to the Nashville Predators, but the Pioneers did add graduate transfer Corbin Kaczperski from Yale to supplement preseason All-NCHC goalie Magnus Chrona, who should be the bell cow for David Carle’s team.
For UMD, Ryan Fanti played well enough against Omaha to earn a second straight start. Hear more from Sandelin about that around 7:15pm in our pregame chat on KDAL.
Only change for UMD is the extra skater, which was freshman Connor Kelley against Omaha. Kelley takes Darian Gotz’ spot on the third defensive pairing, with 13th forward Ben Almquist dressing and Gotz a scratch.
