DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – Minnesota Power has become the first utility in the state to deliver 50 percent renewable energy to its customers.
The milestone was reached when the Nobles 2 wind project in southwestern Minnesota came online this month.
With Nobles 2 operational, Minnesota Power’s wind portfolio has grown to 870 megawatts of owned and contracted wind capacity.
The renewable energy mark was also aided by the Great Northern Transmission line that was energized in June. It delivers 250 megawatts of hydro power from Manitoba to Minnesota Power customers.
The company has now retired or idled seven of their nine coal fired generators and reduced carbon emissions by 50 percent from 2005 to the present.
