SUPERIOR, WI (KDAL) – An invention from a UWS biology professor is helping to solve a big problem for beekeepers in the northern climates.
Beekeepers in the winter months typically lose as much as 50 percent of their hives in the upper midwest which results in significant ecological and financial costs.
Professor Edward Burkett has teamed up with a friend and colleague Kenn Raihala to invent what they call the “Beehive Wind Shield” that is designed to protect the hive from cold wind infiltration while still promoting needed ventilation.
Initial small scale tests show that the shield cuts hive loss in half and larger scale tests are now being run by UWS students
