SUPERIOR, WI (KDAL) – Superior Police have declared the possible improvised explosive found on the sidewalk near the new Fire Hall to be an inactive device.
After it was discovered around 9:15 a-m on Tuesday, the Police Department’s Tactical Technology Team confirmed the items appearance as a homemade explosive device.
The building was evacuated and traffic was diverted from the 3300 block of Tower Avenue as a precaution. The Marathon and Oneida County Joint Sheriff’s Office bomb squad was contacted. An advance member of the bomb squad and FBI special agents from the Duluth and Eau Claire offices responded.
A Police Department robot was able to handle the device and determine it to be inactive but contained a grainy residue. The device will be sent to the Wisconsin Crime Lab for testing.
Tower Avenue was reopened and nearby businesses were allowed to reopen Tuesday afternoon.
Superior Police are continuing an investigation into the incident and thank law enforcement partners in Marathon and Oneida Counties and the FBI for their assistance.
