SUPERIOR, WI (KDAL) – The University of Wisconsin-Superior is currently researching the increase in personal protection equipment (PPE) waste, such as disposable masks and gloves, associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.
The study is headed up by chemistry professor Lorena Rios Medoza who has gained international attention for her work on microplastics, microbeads and plastic fibers found in water around the world.
The COVID pandemic has created additional waste and, so far, more than 200 masks and gloves have been found at over 20 locations throughout Superior.
The amount of PPE waste has the potential to grow drastically in the Twin Ports region as use increases.
