ST. PAUL, MN (KDAL) – A special Click It or Ticket Campaign in the last two weeks of November resulted in 1,556 motorists in Minnesota being cited for not wearing a seat belt.
The extra enforcement effort, funded by the National Highway Traffic Administration, also found 52 child seat violations.
91 of the seat belt citations were issued in the State Patrol district in northeast Minnesota which includes Duluth.
A trooper in Virginia cited the same female driver twice in about an hour for not wearing her seat belt.
Although 93.4 percent of front seat occupants are wearing seat belts, un-belted motorists have contributed to a significant rise in traffic fatalities in the state this year.
The latest figures show 93 people not wearing seat belts have died in crashes this year in Minnesota compared to 66 at this time a year ago.
