“Find out what happens … when people stop being polite, and start getting real.”
Yes, the first four games counted. But we all know it’s getting real now, because people will not be polite in this game. It’s UMD and North Dakota, which is quickly emerging as a top rivalry in college hockey.
(While the players aren’t having their lives taped, they are living in a bubble away from their families. The analogy still works. 😁)
Just be ready. Because if their most recent meetings are any indication, the action will be fast and furious from the time the bell rings.
“We know what’s coming,” UMD head coach Scott Sandelin pointedly said. What’s coming is a team that willingly gives up no space on the ice and has skill to make anyone pay for mistakes. The Fighting Hawks have top-line skill with the likes of Shane Pinto up front and Jacob Bernard-Docker on the blue line. Yes, North Dakota is missing freshman defensemen Jake Sanderson and Tyler Kleven, but the man they call JBD, Matt Kiersted, hard-nosed Gabe Bast, and emerging Ethan Frisch mean Brad Berry still has plenty of quality choices without the duo, which is participating in the U.S. World Junior Camp in Michigan.
For UMD, sophomore Ryan Fanti starts in goal. Sandelin is opting for seven defensemen, with Darian Gotz dressing as the extra skater and forward Luke Mylymok is scratched.
North Dakota threw its lines in one of those Boggle things.
