DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – According to figures released this week, the Duluth Fire Department responded to 141 structure fires in 2020, an increase of 51 from the previous year.
It was the first time there was over 100 structure fires in the city since 2015.
Fire Chief Shawn Krizaj says there was a big uptick in kitchen fires as more people stayed home during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The department noted there was a decrease in medical calls, the first since 2017.
Calls for water emergencies also decreased from 28 in 2019 to 25 last year.
To keep the morale of the department up during the pandemic precautions and to continue support for the community, requests for drive-by appearances were honored for birthdays, graduation, anniversaries and other celebrations during the year.
