DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – Following a recommendation from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Essentia Health will pause the administration of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine.
According to the CDC and FDA since April 12th there have been six cases of severe blood clotting after receiving the Johnson & Johnson vaccine out of more than 6.8 million doses that were distributed.
Even though the adverse reactions were extremely rare, all reports of health problems following a vaccination are taken very seriously and the pause was made out of an abundance of caution.
Essentia will continue administering Pfizer and Moderna vaccines to anyone 16 or older.
The pause is not expected to affect Essentia vaccination efforts with the exception of the Brainerd Lakes region.
Appointments for those due to receive the J&J vaccine from Essentia will be rescheduled in the coming days.
In a statement, St. Luke’s in Duluth says they have no Johnson & Johnson vaccine on hand and the pause will not affect their appointments.
