ST. PAUL, MN (CBS-3) – The Minnesota Supreme Court is calling for further action before ruling on a major permit issued to PolyMet for its proposed copper nickel mine near Hoyt Lakes.
The State Supreme Court ruling Wednesday both affirms part of the DNR’s process it took toward granting PolyMet its permit to mine, but also asks the state agency to hold a future hearing on an issue related to the mine’s tailings basin.
Separately, the court sided with the Court of Appeals when it reversed PolyMet’s permit to mine, claiming the court didn’t include an ending date for the mine.
The Supreme Court is now asking the DNR to determine an end date.
The DNR issued PolyMet its permit to mine in December 2018. Environmentalists swiftly challenged it in court.
It is one of the final permits needed by PolyMet to move forward with its NorthMet proposal.
