DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – A sudden wind shift on Saturday evening created rip currents along Park Point that caught four teenage swimmers who were pulled away from the Lake Superior shoreline.
The Duluth Fire Department and St. Louis County Rescue Squad responded to the scene around the 3100 block of Minnesota Avenue at 6:43 p-m.
Two of the swimmers were able to return to shore but the other two were still struggling in the water when crews arrived.
After being separated by the large waves, one made it to shore and treated by ambulance personnel, the other was helped from the water by a crew member in a cold water suit from the “Marine 19” rescue boat.
That swimmer was about 350 feet from the shore when he was rescued.
The Fire Department is reminding the public that rip currents can develop very quickly on Lake Superior beaches and swimmers need to pay attention to the changing conditions.
Duluth Police, Mayo Ambulance and the U-S Coast Guard were also involved in the water rescue response.
