ST. PAUL, MN (KDAL) – The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is partnering with the Nature Conservancy to reforest north shore state parks with native tree species.
Native trees such as birch, aspen, balsam fir and white spruce have been giving way to invasive grasses and shrubs due to early logging, deer browse and climate change.
Thousands of seedlings have been planted across Split Rock Lighthouse, Gooseberry Falls, Temperance River and Cascade River State Parks.
Visitors may see fencing and protective enclosures around the new plantings to discourage deer browse.
As the trees grow, the forest will change over time and attract a different species of wildlife.
