DULUTH, MN (CBS-3) – After 112 years, The Hills Youth and Family Services announced Monday financial issues are forcing them to shut down all operations, including a center that treats juvenile offenders in Duluth’s Woodland neighborhood.
The Hills leaders said their organization took a big risk in opening an additional location in East Bethel, MN in 2020 to help more children in need of mental health services.
In a statement, leaders of the facility says that extraordinarily high fixed costs, the State’s inaction on rate adjustments and the fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic, left them with an insurmountable financial burden.
After pursuing every avenue to find a viable financial solution, options have run out and they decided to close.
The focus now is to ensure that the children in their care are transitioned to new placements and the staff will continue to care for them throughout the transition.
The Hills’ community programs, including the Neighborhood Youth Services and day treatment sites, will continue to operate.
They are searching for new operators in the Duluth area to take over those services before The Hills officially shuts down on July 2.
