DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – Recent drinking water tests at 102 older homes in Duluth showed higher than expected levels of lead. 79 of the samples were at or above current EPA limits.
Lead lines were installed throughout Duluth until 1929 and the city has been replacing those lines over the last 20 years.
There are about 5,000 publicly owned lead service lines left to replace and the number of privately owned lead service lines is unknown.
Planning is underway to address the problem and find the funding to continue replacing public lead service pipes.
The city is encouraging those living in single family homes built before 1930 to flush the lines by running the water for about three minutes before drinking or to use water filters.
Comfort Systems is working on a system to credit home owners for excess water use for lead flushing.
