DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – Responding to neighborhood complaints, Duluth Police say they will be issuing citations for the violation of state and city laws regarding the use of fireworks.
Anything that explodes or shoots into the air is not legal in Minnesota or Wisconsin.
Last year, the fireworks complaints nearly tripled over the previous year. Deputy Chief of Police Steve Stracek says some of the calls they receive are reported as the “sound of shots” which calls for a different response than for a nuisance call.
Loud bangs associated with fireworks can also negatively impact infants, young children and pets. They can also trigger PTSD episodes.
The Duluth Fire Department says care needs to be practiced even when using legal fireworks since many with sparks could create a fire hazard.
Over 30 percent of firework injuries come from sparklers and over 40 percent happen to children.
Police and Fire spokespeople say residents should head to Bayfront to enjoy a professional 4th of July display instead of creating their own fireworks show at home.
