DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – A state of emergency has been declared for Duluth by Mayor Emily Larson and masks will be required in most public indoor spaces beginning at 5 p-m Friday.
The 30 day mask mandate was put in place to help slow the spread of COVID-19 and protect the health of the community.
The Mayor was joined in making the announcement Thursday by medical officers from Essentia and St. Luke’s and the St. Louis County Director of Public Health.
Mayor Larson said she is asking the public to wear a mask, social distance, get vaccinated and get a booster to protect you, your loved ones and those around you.
County Public Health Director Amy Westbrook expressed concern that non-compliance presents a grave risk to local care systems and community health.
Violations of the mandate could lead to a warning letter or a fine.
Unless extended, the state of emergency proclamation in Duluth will end on February 12th.
(The local state of emergency is pursuant to Duluth City Code Section 17-7. The face covering requirement states that all persons ages five and up are required to wear a face covering in places of public accommodation. A public space of accommodation includes the indoor space of a business, or an educational, refreshment, entertainment or recreation facility, public transportation, or an institution of any kind, whether licensed or not, whose goods, services, facilities, privileges, advantages, or accommodations are extended, offered, sold, or otherwise made available to the public. )
