DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – The Duluth Fire Department responded to reports of heavy smoke below I-35 near the Mesaba-Superior Street exit early Wednesday afternoon.
According to witnesses the area under the freeway was used by squatters as a campsite.
The fire was quickly extinguished and nobody was found in the area and no injuries were reported.
Crews found a variety of debris including several pallets, a mattress and personal items at the scene.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The Fire Department urges those people needing shelter to use the services of CHUM at 120 North 1st Avenue West or the Rainbow Center’s Warming Center at 211 North 3rd Avenue East.
