KUGLER TOWNSHIP, MN (KDAL) – A 47 year old man is in custody following a traffic stop on Friday that turned violent.
A St. Louis County Sheriff Deputy attempted a traffic stop on the Wahlsten Road in Kugler Township just after noon.
When the suspect pulled over he suddenly backed his pickup truck into the squad, with the deputy still inside, and then fled.
Following several unsuccessful PIT maneuvers during a 3 mile pursuit, a stop stick was placed on Highway 21 and damaged the front tires of the truck.
After driving another half mile on the damaged tires, the truck was stopped.
The driver got out brandishing a screwdriver at the deputy and a Babbitt Police officer.
After ignoring commands to drop the weapon, a taser was used and the suspect fell into the ditch.
He continued to resist and was finally secured in handcuffs after additional law enforcement arrived on the scene.
The deputy and police officer received medical treatment for injuries sustained during the struggle.
After being checked out by medical staff, the suspect was taken to the St. Louis County Jail in Virginia on various charges including assault, damage to property, DUI and an outstanding warrant in Wisconsin.
