DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – An artist from Drummond, Wisconsin has been chosen by Essentia Health to create a sculpture at the entrance to the new St. Mary’s Medical Center.
Sara Balbin’s artwork is named “The Healing Waters of Gitchi Gamig” and draws on local history, the Anishinaabe culture and Lake Superior imagery.
Balbin was treated at Essentia for breast cancer and is dedicating the piece to the staff, nurses and doctors that she encountered on her journey to remission.
She hopes those passing the sculpture when entering or exiting the hospital will find peace, comfort and hope.
The ten foot high artwork will be illuminated at night and installed in the spring of 2023.
Balbin, who owns and operates Dragonfly Studios, was awarded the contract following a nationwide search for artists with connections to the Essentia service area.
