DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – At a news conference Wednesday, Duluth Police Chief Mike Tusken says the Police Department is 22 officers below its authorized strength.
That shortage has required some changes in the response to some non-emergency calls for service.
Among the changes are the police response to non-injury property damage vehicle crashes, adding more Community Service Officer interns, urging the reporting of minor crimes online and light duty officers responding to calls via the phone.
Several ways to attract more recruits and boost the number of officers have been put in place including a 13 percent pay raise over a 3 year period.
Chief Tusken says having a timely and professional response to emergency calls for service will continue to be a priority of the department.
