Off we go from Amsoil Arena, where UMD and Arizona State both bring 12 newcomers into this 2022-23 regular season opener.
For the Bulldogs, nine of the 12 newcomers are dressed, including backup goalies Matthew Thiessen (Maine transfer) and Zach Sandy (freshman). Freshman forwards Jack Smith and Luke Johnson will wait for their UMD debuts, as will freshman defenseman Joey Pierce of Hermantown.
UMD has danced this dance before, and the early returns on these younger groups is almost always mixed. You know the young guys are going to be amped, but part of this is understanding we’re playing a long game here. Nothing will be determined in the opener, outside of a winner and a loser for this one night.
That said, I look forward to all the overreactions throughout the game.
REMEMBER: We’re on Kat Country this weekend. 98.9 on the FM dial. Stream here, starting at 5:30pm CT. Or download the KTCO app. Or search for KTCO on iHeartRadio. Lots of ways to find it.
