DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – The Western Lake Superior Sanitary District (WLSSD) is celebrating the passage of the Clean Water Act in 1972 with a community open house on Tuesday.
The event will feature facility tours, food, games and educational activities for all ages. The open house will run from 5 to 7:30 p-m.
The Clean Water Act set the foundation for improving water quality nationwide and the WLSSD has been cleaning wastewater since 1978.
Prior to its opening, untreated and under treated sewage was discharged into the St. Louis River causing serious pollution problems.
Since operations began at the WLSSD, the water quality improved and the river has resumed being safe for recreational fishing, swimming, kayaking and other activities.
