ST. CLOUD, Minn. — Ahh, this place looks awful familiar. It’s like I’ve been here recently.
Oh, wait.
We are back at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center for yet another UMD vs St. Cloud State series. If all of this feels too familiar for you, there’s a reason why.
The Bulldogs and Huskies met for the first time last season on Feb. 8, after their scheduled weekend series in St. Cloud was scrapped when UMD went into a COVID pause. It is now March 10, 2023, a span of 396 days. Discounting the offseason, UMD and SCSU have now played ten times in 208 possible gamedays. You can make it 11 in 209, 12 in 210, and maybe 13 in 211 after this weekend.
If the last ten meetings are any indication, we’re in for a wild weekend. We’ll see if UMD can continue to play relatively well defensively against St. Cloud State. The Bulldogs conceded just two five-on-five goals here last weekend, after SCSU was held to three such tallies during the January series in Duluth.
As expected, Jack Peart and Ondrej Trejbal return to the SCSU blue line. That should allow Brett Larson and staff to better distribute the minutes among that group.
For UMD, Aiden Dubinsky is back on the blue line, giving the Bulldogs a 12 forward/7 defensemen lineup construction into this must-win series.
