DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – The rapid melting of snow this week has clear water entering sanitary sewer system of the WLSSD.
The water from melting snow is not meant to enter sanitary sewers but can inadvertently seep through cracks or improperly connected roof and foundation drains.
The increased flow has been diverted to holding tanks in several locations but overflows are possible as more water enters the system.
As of Wednesday, the peak flow to the treatment plant exceeded 120 million gallons a day compared to an average daily flow of 38 million gallons.
Residents are asked to make sure sump pumps are directing water away from home foundations and do not enter the sanitary sewer system.
They are also asked to report any overflows from manholes and avoid contact with any sewer overflow.
Contact the WLSSD at 722-3336 24-hours per day.
