UNDATED (KDAL) – Law enforcement in both Minnesota and Wisconsin are beginning the Click It or Ticket seat belt safety campaign this week.
As Memorial Day and the summer driving season gets underway, patrols will be stepped up through Sunday, June 4th looking for unbelted drivers and passengers.
The goal of the increased enforcement is not only writing tickets but also to educate and increase awareness of the seat belt requirement.
According to the Minnesota Department of Public Service, 87 people died last year and more than 1200 were injured because they were not wearing their seat belt.
In Wisconsin, a 2022 survey found that 87.5 percent of motorists buckle up but that number has been dropping from a high of 90.4 percent the previous year.
Drivers are also encouraged to slow down and pay attention to the road during the busy summer driving season.
