ST. PAUL, MN (KDAL) – The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will keep track of the fall colors across the state on their website (https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/fall_colors/index.html).
Color coded maps will show the approximate percentage of leaves that have changed color in the state.
Colors in Minnesota typically peak in mid to late September through mid October starting in the far north and working southward.
Although peak colors last just a couple weeks, it varies widely depending on location and the weather.
Temperature and precipitation impacts the color peak and how long it lasts.
Although a light frost can intensify colors, a hard freeze could cause trees to drop their leaves early.
Rain and wind can also shorten the peak color period.
