DULUTH, MN (MNN) – The Minnesota and Wisconsin Departments of Transportation have unveiled their recommendation for the location of the proposed Blatnik Bridge replacement.
For the most part, it will be where the bridge is currently located according to MnDOT’s Pat Huston.
The most significant change would be the connection on the Superior side which would go directly onto Highway 53 rather than the current exit on Hammond Avenue.
There would also be a new interchange that connects with Tower Avenue and Wisconsin Highway 35.
Huston says the plan is to begin the major portion of the project in 2026 with construction likely to take four to five years. It’s expected traffic will be detoured to the Bong Bridge for a significant portion of that time.
Minnesota and Wisconsin have each committed 400 million dollars to the project and are asking the federal government for an additional billion dollars.
A public hearing on the plan and the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) will be at 5 p-m Tuesday in the Superior Library at 1530 Tower Avenue.
