DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – Minnesota Power and Superior Water Light and Power are sharing some tips to help you avoid becoming a victim of a scam this heating season.
The utilities say the most common scams are phone calls or emails telling customers that service will be shut off unless immediate payment with pre-paid debit cards or credit card numbers are made to pay the bill.
The scams usually become more widespread as heating season ramps up in the winter months.
Customers who think they are dealing with a scam call should just hang up or not reply to emails.
It is possible that scammers can display fake caller I-D numbers that reflect power company numbers or return email addresses that are similar to actual addresses.
You can also report the illegal activity by calling Minnesota Power at 800-228-4966 or Superior Water Light and Power at 800-227-7957.
