DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – The Natural Resources Research Institute (NRRI) at UMD has received a 2.9 million dollar grant from the U-S Department of Energy (DOE) to develop a bio-based product that would replace fossil fuel in electric arc furnace steel making.
Even though electric arc furnace steel production is already lower in carbon emissions than traditional blast furnace steel making, industry leaders are aiming to reduce or eliminate fossil fuels to create so-called “green steel.”
The DOE grant will be matched by 1.6 million in NRRI internal funding for the project that begins this month.
Project leaders hope to demonstrate the process on a large scale in an actual steel mill by 2026.
