ST. PAUL, MN (KDAL) – The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has completed the 2024 moose population survey in northern St. Louis and Lake Counties.
Results show that, after a steep decline from about 8,000 moose in 2009, the population seems to have stabilized at around 3,700 animals over recent years.
Given the long term trends, DNR researchers point out that moose in the state remain at risk due to climate change, parasites and predator impacts on calf survival.
Besides the aerial population survey, biologists also record the types of forest habitats being used by the moose and the effects of timber management activity.
