DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – The heavy snow in the region last week temporarily reduced the wildfire danger but preparations are in place for the return of dry conditions.
Several agencies in northeast Minnesota including the DNR, U-S Forest Service and the St. Louis County Office of Emergency Management have been working through the winter to update plans and prepare for potential wildfires.
Before the snow, there were over 20 grass fires in the county and another dozen in Duluth.
With above normal temperatures and the rapid snow melt, dangerous fire conditions are expected to return until vegetation greens up.
St. Louis County has unveiled a new mapping tool that enables residents to view the fire risk specific to their community or neighborhood.
The web page also includes tips to reduce the fire risk on your property and what to do if an evacuation is necessary. The map and more information can be found online at stlouiscountymn.gov/wildfire
