MADISON, WI (KDAL) – There are now 53 of Wisconsin’s 72 counties that have well established populations of the invasive spongy moths.
Formerly known as the Gypsy moth, spongy moth caterpillars feed on many tree and shrub species stripping the leaves from the plants.
If the trees are otherwise healthy, they can recover in a few weeks but repeated defoliation or other stressors like drought and disease could lead to the death of the tree.
Most experts believe this spring and summer could be another busy season of spongy moth caterpillars.
To provide information on the moths and some advice on dealing with them, the Wisconsin DNR, Department of Agriculture and the U-W Extension have teamed up to launch a new website called the Spongy Moth Resource Center at https://spongymoth.wi.gov/Pages/home.aspx
