DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – The 6th Judicial District has now reduced its major criminal caseload to pre-pandemic levels.
There were 649 cases that were put on hold during the COVID-19 pandemic era in the Arrowhead region of Minnesota.
The district court resolved the cases using socially distant jury trials, remote hearings, case resolution events and also hired extra support staff.
While reducing the backlog, the courts also needed to manage the 43 thousand court filings that the district receives each year.
6th District Chief Judge Leslie Beiers says eliminating the pandemic backlog could not have been done without the significant partnership of county attorneys, private defense attorneys and public defenders.
