ST. PAUL, MN (KDAL) – The Minnesota Department of Agriculture will be treating areas of central and northern St. Louis County to slow the spread of the spongy moth.
The aerial spraying activities begin Thursday in the cities of Hibbing, Mountain Iron and Virginia and three other rural areas.
The management activities will continue for several days depending on the weather.
A food grade, organically certified substance will be applied by low flying aircraft contracted by the U-S Forest Service. The product is not harmful to humans, animals or other insects.
It contains pheromones specific to spongy moths (formerly called gypsy moths) and makes it difficult for males to find female moths for mating.
The spongy moths are among the most destructive invasive tree pests and have been spreading from east to west across the country.
