DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – The NOAA Climate Prediction Center has released the Winter Outlook for the upcoming winter season.
The report shows an equal chance of above or below normal temperatures for the region while it appears precipitation will be above normal.
According to the National Weather Service Office in Duluth, a La Nina pattern is expected to develop this winter which historically means below normal temperatures but there is significant variability.
A La Nina typically means increased storminess and significant cold weather outbreaks in the Northland.
The last weak La Nina in the winter of 2022 and 2023 triggered a near record snowfall but other weak La Nina winters featured below normal seasonal snow.
Climate patterns cannot predict exact timing, intensity or frequency of winter weather events but only tilts the odds of certain seasonal values.
